Owner Noel Hetherton celebrated another notable success for his long-standing breeding operation as Evening Scent romped home in the mud at Haydock Park today.
The filly, trained by the owner`s son James, proved to be a revelation in the Akzo Nobel Premier Handicap.
The 12-1 chance quickened to the front with more than two furlongs to travel, coming home six lengths ahead of Simple Ideals.
'She is the seventh generation that we`ve bred - it goes right back to the War years,' said Hetherton.
'I`m just delighted that we`ve been able to keep things going for so long.'
Hetherton junior was keen to give plenty of credit to Evening Scent`s apprentice rider Paul Quinn.
'We asked Paul Quinn to sit at the back in the early stages and he`s executed the job perfectly,' said the trainer.
'This filly is only small but she`s very game and she can win again before the handicapper gets hold of her. There`s a possible race at Redcar next week.'
Favourite backers suffered an agonising reverse as Celebration Town just failed to catch Dakota Sioux in the Bet Direct Autumn Handicap.
Young Paul Hanagan stole a march on the Richard Fahey-trained Dakota Sioux, sending his mount clear in the home straight.
Celebration Town finished powerfully but had just too much leeway to make up in the final furlong and went down by a neck.
'The boss told me to go out and do that and I knew she would pick me up for me,' said Hanagan.
Polly Golightly followed up her victory at Chester earlier in the week when landing the Akzo Nobel Holdings Handicap.
The filly ploughed a lone furrow against the far rail and was a length to the good over Abbajabba at the line.
Her jockey Chris Rutter did not become confident about her chances until going down to the start.
'We were worried that the race would come too soon but I she gave me a good feel on the way down and I knew she would run well,' he said.
